Pet Personality? It’s Written in the Stars!

I do not own a pet, but I wouldn’t mind having one. Nonetheless, we had one when I was a young kid—an aspin or asong Pinoy (Filipino dog). Back then, we used to call native dogs askal or asong kalye (street dog). Labels like these weren’t as common then, and we didn’t really distinguish between those with lahi (breed) and the native ones. We were more excited about what names to give our pets than about bragging whether they had a pedigree.

I remember our dogs—Brownie, who was actually my Lola’s (grandmother’s) loyal companion, always listening to her melancholic chatter day in and day out; and Snoopy, who had a clipped short tail because, allegedly, he was part Doberman. My elder brother would go the extra mile bathing Snoopy with premium dog care products—which were considered a luxury at the time. Most dogs were simply bathed with plain soap and water, if bathed at all. I also remember my brother preparing milk in a Tupperware bowl for Snoopy when he was little, while Lola’s Brownie got the usual human fare—rice and ulam (typically fish, meat, or vegetable leftovers).

But hey, they lived long and healthy lives even without the imported specialty pet foods we see in stores today.

I no longer remember when we got them, but they were certainly treated as part of the family. They offered extra security for the household, and quiet companionship whenever emotional clouds hung low.

Today, pet owners have definitely stepped up when it comes to how they care for their animals. I’ve noticed how pets are becoming more humanized—many even celebrate their pets’ birthdays! That got me thinking: why not put together some fun information on pet personality based on their birthday? Call it Petstrology—just for entertainment.
